Yay, Meme!

I'd like to thank Yvette for making my blog post today a no-brainer.

I'd also like to thank my iPod for not making me look like as much of a dork as it could've.†

If that Lionel Ritchie‡ ever got out, it would be TOTALLY embarrassing.§

1. Hang Wire - Pixies
2. Seven Veils - Peter Murphy
3. Hole - Catherine Wheel
4. Messin' With the Mekon - Robert Plant
5. True - Spandau Ballet#
6. Lucretia - Sisters of Mercy
7. Dead Man's Party - Oingo Boingo††
8. Still of the Night - Whitesnake
9. Salsbury Hill - Peter Gabriel
10. Let Me See - Morcheeba
11. La Lune - Sarah Brightman
12. Into the Fire - Sarah McLachlan
13. Add It Up - Violent Femmes
14. Rain Will Fall - I Mother Earth
15. Der Kommissar - Falco
16. Gin and Juice - Snoop Dogg
17. I Miss the Girl - Soul Coughing
18. Push It - Salt-N-Pepa
19. Golden Touch - Razorlight
20.‡‡ Over the Hills and Far Away - Gary Moore

Deep in my heart, I love this meme. I did it on Facebook and found it very pleasant. I'd highly recommend it to any of you, so tag if you want it. Just turn your music player of choice on, put it on shuffle, list the first twenty% songs (if you cheat or edit, you're missing the point) and tag anyone you want.

I'm always interested in seeing what other people listen to, so let me know if you decide to do it.

I'm leaving for The Lake in a couple of hours. This year, I may just put the old iPod on shuffle and see how that treats me.

Besides, there's the dark-corridor-in-a-horror-flick thrill that Lionel Ritchie might be lurking around every corner.

†FOOTNOTE (crossed): Though it did want me to list La Lune three times.

‡FOOTNOTE (double-crossed): I have a GOOD EXCUSE. For our 20th high school reunion, when I was on the committee, I volunteered to make CDs for each year we were in high school (1981-1985). I (theatre geek, underachiever, fashion disaster, metal chick) picked five songs, Heidi Dowd (cheerleader, valedictorian, golden girl, mainstream) picked five songs, and I included the Billboard Top Ten for each year. Lionel Ritchie was in the top ten a LOT in those days.

§FOOTNOTE (swerved): You'll all note I've decided to stop using Neil Diamond as my measure of dorkitude in music. Neil's a hero. Neil's a classic. And he's way more hip than Lionel Ritchie.

FOOTNOTE (paragraphed): Love me some Robert Plant.

#FOOTNOTE (pounded): Brother says I don't like this song. "No you don't. You really don't. You may think you do, but you don't." Apparently, this embarrasses Brother more than it embarrasses me.

††FOOTNOTE (ddouble-ccrossed): This is Steve's and my song.

‡‡FOOTNOTE (doubble-crossssed): Then I looked back at Yvette's instructions and she only asked for 15. But if I only do 15, I don't get Snooop and that would make me sad. Gin & Juice, btw, is the only song in common between my FB list and this one. The universe is trying to tell me something. Something about gin.

%FOOTNOTE (percented): In true Marin fashion, I now find the 20 I thought I did on FB was actually 25. I'm a rebel, making up rules as I go along... if you do the meme, pick a number from 15 to 25 and use that. *ahem*

Lorenzo Saves a Barfly

Some days, a meme is just what I need.

Structure.

Guidance.

Further validation† of my presence on the innernets.

The Honest Scrap Award is simple:

Say 10 honest things about yourself, pass it on to seven people. Lorenzo Laurie tagged me.

Now, Laurie's cat was the honest scrap in her blog. Does this mean, I wondered, that I should have Quill, the Cat for Scale, do this? Or should I do it?‡

Being much like King Solomon,§ I decided to do five Quill honest scraps and five me honest scraps. The lucky souls I tag can interpret the rules any way they choose.

Quill:

1. Despite the fact that I regularly rake the door jamb of the powder room, my claws are too long.

2. I can't eat canned food without getting a whole glob of it on my nose.

3. I don't get the fascination with yarn, but circular needles are the best kitty toy ever.

4. She makes me jump for treats. Secretly, I like it.

5. I'm mostly deaf, so I can't hear when you say, "No!"

Marin:

1. Despite the fact that I regularly chip them on work files, knitting, spontaneously while driving... my claws are too long.

2. I can't eat lunch without leaving a memento of the occasion on my shirt.

3. I don't know why anybody would knit with anything but circular needles. They're the best knitting invention ever.

4. I pretend that making the cat jump for treats is a training exercise. Secretly, I feel wicked# doing it.

5. I am fully capable of slipping into a knitting-/reading-/thinking-/gazing-induced trance, so I can't hear you when you say, "No!"

OK, who wants it? Nathan -- take a break from perfumery? Tani†† -- you never do any of these things. Jayne -- ditto. Patrick would be funny if he actually did it, but will probably sneer at the whole idea of being tagged. Ally, we haven't done this in the longest time. Sylvia can answer for the House of Fuzzy Crack‡‡ if she wants. And... The Pollyannas.§§

†FOOTNOTE (crossed): Something I need deeply and on a daily basis.

‡FOOTNOTE (double-crossed): Know how I have a book problem? Some of my book problem is a subset of my research problem. If I can't be a saint by the time I die, my Plan B is to know everything. So, yeah, I researched the issue.

§FOOTNOTE (swerved): In my own mind.

FOOTNOTE (paragraphed): Horizontal surface, dontcha know.

#FOOTNOTE (pounded): And sometimes a little guilty. He's 18 -- I probably have no non-sadistic reason for trying to make any an old cat learn any new tricks.

††FOOTNOTE (ddouble-ccrossed): Whose blog is a biiiiig secret.

‡‡FOOTNOTE (doubble-crossssed): If I can do my fuzzy-wuzzy, she can do her fuzzy-wuzzy.

§§FOOTNOTE (two Pollyannas in one!): Who I am now conveniently counting as one, but who can do a tag-team response, maybe including their respective cats.

Rock Me, Amadeus

I've seen this on Facebook, but I finally caved when perusing Thursday's† Art of Darkness.

And then someone else I like‡ did it on Tuesday.

[SUMMARY: I am sheep, hear me bleat.]

To come up with your own band’s CD cover, do the following:

Go here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Random The first article that pops up is the name of your band.§

Now go here: http://www.quotationspage.com/random.php3. The last four words of the very last quote is the title of your album.

Then go here: http://www.flickr.com/explore/interesting/7days/. The third picture on the page is your album cover.#

Finally, use the graphics program of your choice†† to put them all together.

For extra credit,‡‡ write a Rolling Stone review about the album.

[SUMMARY: Can I take my extra credit in saint points?]

Some songwriters labour at their craft, others seem to stumble upon it. Such stumbling is the case with the dusky, bat-fleeting mountain-country rambles on Unfit to Govern, the second album from Colorado's Outside the Gate. Wistful tangoes like "Devil's Thumb" and rocky waltzes like "Fourteener" evoke full-blown images of frontier cemeteries and high tundra loners, living with coyotes and cougars somewhere above the timberline. Pinballing around these twisted folk-goth laments, frontwoman Marin Gunnison% sings like she's hurt and a little angry, but has the cattle prod to even the score. Her whiskey alto whispers on the wind, picking up momentum as it's pursued by the rising moans behind her. Some will undoubtedly see their desolate visions as mere device, but the songs -- which are kith and kin to 16 Horsepower and the Gun Club, with a blooming sense of humour -- maintain Outside the Gate's misty mountain drama is for real.
[Based on this actual Rolling Stone review]

†FOOTNOTE (crossed): Actually, two Thursdays ago. I'm a little swamped.

‡FOOTNOTE (double-crossed): See the waffle post for brain power level last week.

§FOOTNOTE (swerved): Mine is "Outside the Gate," oddly enough an actual album title for somebody else. Oh, the scandals and lawsuits we shall have!

FOOTNOTE (paragraphed): My whole quote: "The danger is not that a particular class is unfit to govern. Every class is unfit to govern." -- Lord Acton, Letter to Mary Gladstone, 1881

#FOOTNOTE (pounded): Originally, my picture was this one, which would've given a very deep religious state/political state twist to the whole endeavour, only the pretty Buddhas wouldn't show up on my computer (I'm guessing some sort of security thing), so I rolled the dice again and got this:

Which now puts my album in a kind of "don't fence me in" folk journey through the American West. The Rolling Stone review would've been entirely different with the Buddhas.

††FOOTNOTE (ddouble-ccrossed): Which turned out to be Sumo Paint, which is a free online app that has most of the features of Adobe Photoshop Elements, but I can get to here at the office.

‡‡FOOTNOTE (doubble-crossssed): Extra credit is almost always more interesting than the actual assignment.

%FOOTNOTE (percented): If you're gonna go American West, may as well take the nom de guerre for it. Gunnison, for those of you who may be wondering, is where I was born. And where I went to college. And where I lost my virginity. Rumour had it I would have to go back there to spawn and die.

First Meme in a Brave New Year

I *like* this one.

I am, as ever, aware that a meme is something of a cop-out, but this is one of the best I've seen, so I'm giving myself a pass.†

Besides, there's a month's worth of pictures in the camera and you'll get much better blogquality with pictures.‡

I would like to kick in two little non-meme notes before I head into the land of the highly directed:

  1. I am a *headline*. I wouldn't even mention it, of course,§ only I think you would really enjoy the photos in the post itself,% and
  2. Kim noticed I had the same number of posts in 2008 as 2007. I kinda hope I manage to land on that same number this year, though I fear some version of Heisenberg's Principle^ will taint the results.

1. Where did you begin 2008? Alone, in my chair.
2. What was your status by Valentines Day? Is this a sick joke? 41 years with no Valentine,@ and thanks for reminding me of that.
3. Were you in school anytime this year? Cheerfully, no.
4. Did you have to go to the hospital? Twice, both planned.#
5. Did you have any encounters with the police? Not even an expired plate incident.
6. Where did you go on vacation? The Lake. Just the Lake. It was a pretty staid year.
7. What did you purchase that was over $100? Addi Clicks, a carpet steamer... OK, in 2009 I'm getting a hooker†† or something.
8. Did you know anybody who got married? At least one.
9. Did you know anybody who passed away? Probably more than got married.‡‡
10. Did you move anywhere? No, and I will be buried in the basement of this house.
11. What sporting events did you attend? I somehow managed to miss seeing the Nuggets this year, but I saw the Broncos (bleah), Rockies and Avs. One trip to the Avs was even knitting-related.
12. What concerts/shows did you go to? Rush,§§ Queensryche,¶¶ Mitch Fatel,## Sisters of Mercy.††† Wow. I'm pretty sure I'm not NEARLY as stuck in the geekworld as I sound, given that list.
13. Describe your birthday. It was oddly good. Wholly unplanned, and surprisingly complete.
14. What is the ONE thing you thought you would not do, but did, in 2008? Go back to Stevens Point, WI.
15. What have been your favorite moments? The aforementioned birthday, making friends with my heroes, finding heroes in my friends.
16. Any new additions to your family? Not yet.‡‡‡
17. What was your best month? I'm sure it must've been June.
18. Who has been your best drinking buddy? Bag Lady Katharyn.
19. Made new friends? A few.
20. Favorite night out? The spelling bee.
21. Other than home, where did you spend most of your time? Work. Seriously... a hooker in 2009.
22. Have you lost any friends this year? One or two, depending on how you count it.
23. Change your hairstyle? I haven't cut it all year, so sort of. Does having no style count as a style?
24. Have any car accidents? Not one.
25. How old did you turn this year? 41. After 40, it's all cake.
26. Do you have a New Years resolution? I haven't decided yet. Cheesy waste of time or well-timed opportunity? Baby steps or massive overhaul?
27. Do anything embarrassing? Not really -- mostly because part of the Dork Credo says it's better to laugh with those people laughing at you than slink away with a red face.
28. Buy anything from eBay? The Lion that Saved Christmas.
29. Get married or divorced? Nope.
30. Get hit on? Several times. Yay, me!
31. Been snowboarding? No... and I wouldn't hold your breath on that one.§§§
32. Did you get sick this year? Once or twice.
33. Are you happy to see 2008 go? Ambivalent.
34. Been naughty or nice? All of the above.
35. What are you looking forward to most in 2009? Maybe that hooker...

Found at Ms. Kitty's blog.

I learned something here today: I *really* need to get out more.

Cruel Intentions -- By Killian

Marin says: I'm in love. I thought I loved Black Tourmaline. I thought I loved Black Cashmere.

That was clearly puppy love.

Not only does this flow through an amazing tale of citrus and woods, it stays for more than 24 hours, with the best last breath of any perfume I've ever tried. Where most fade into a similar sweetish vanilla-amber thing, this one is a slightly woody spicy glory that had me waking up to snork my wrists the morning after I first dabbed it on.

It reads as a sort of incense, but not smoky and not too churchy -- must be the wood resins. There's a touch of sandalwood, not enough to get to that headshop place, but just the right amount. Baby bear sandalwood.

This is rich and resinous without being overpowering, round and woody without being bland. It's classic and well-crafted by turns, without being passé. It's spicy without being foody.¶¶¶ It's a dozen things I love and a dozen things I think I don't like, but balanced so perfectly I love it all.

Did I mention I love it?

Hans *has* to smell this...

By Killan### says: A fragrance inspired by the warm, enfolding balsamic notes of Oud, a legendary wood said to be « worth more than its weight in gold ».

†FOOTNOTE (crossed): If I don't, who will?

‡FOOTNOTE (double-crossed): That's my story and I'm sticking with it.

§FOOTNOTE (swerved): Of COURSE, I wouldn't want to brag about the source because it's only Nathan Branch, he of the impeccable taste, the way with words, the photographic genius, the cachet of one who gets Ormonde Jayne in 50ml sample size... *gushgushgush* Juno turned me on to him, Sylvia and Rosie need to read him.

%FOOTNOTE (percented): ...and may happily consider a bunny skull belt buckle.

^FOOTNOTE (careted): The variables being the number of posts and my ability to spontaneously reach that number in a given year.

FOOTNOTE (paragraphed): Which is exactly where I started 2009. I think. Maybe I was at Patrick Carroll's... oh, hell. I just need to get out more.

@FOONOTE (atted): Also, I've never had a boyfriend at Christmas or my birthday and I've never had sex in November. Maybe I've just found the beginnings of a list of resolutions.

#FOOTNOTE (pounded): As opposed to emergent ccare. I think I'd have to get out of the house to earn emergent care.

††FOOTNOTE (ddouble-ccrossed): Gigolo? Is there a better word?

‡‡FOOTNOTE (doubble-crossssed): None of you is allowed to die this year. I need a year without fresh mourning.

§§FOOTNOTE (very twisted): Which just cemented my dorkified, never-ending love of Rush, so marvelous was the concert.

¶¶FOOTNOTE (clubs of the 80s): Still like them, vocals still good, Geoff Tate has no sense of humour about himself, his music, possibly anything else... and I found that a little sad.

##FOOTNOTE (pounding like that vein in my temple): Eh. I thought he'd be better. I still laughed. I did come to the conclusion comedians should refresh their material before they tour.

†††FOOTNOTE (how gothic): Who are unerringly awful in concert and, in fact, use so much fog that one is hard-pressed to swear there are even musicians on stage. Yet, I will go every time I get a chance because it always reminds me of how much I like the music. So I go home and listen to the good versions on my iPod. Besides, some day I'm actually going to see Andrew Eldritch. And for the record, I totally disagree with the linked review about one thing: It was NOT looped. The last time I was them saw almost undoubtedly pre-recorded, but this time it was too *off* to be recorded. Sometimes it sounded like the guitarist was playing one song while Andy was singing another, it was that off.

‡‡‡FOOTNOTE (the tracks of my tears -- have I already used that one?): Dad's engaged. There's a whole stepfamily waiting in the wings.

§§§FOOTNOTE (sssnowboarding): I tried snowboarding once. I took a group lesson with a bunch of six-year-olds with no gravity and no fear and they passed me off to another instructor for one-on-one training (when you're holding the first graders back, you should probably pack it in) and at one point, I actually sat in the snow and beat my little fists on its crust in frustration. At some point, the instructor asked if I was done for the day (it should be noted I was finally sort of getting it sort of) and I said, "yes." So he called Ski Patrol and they TOOK ME DOWN ON A STRETCHER. I considered being embarrassed, but I figured the people watching me hauled down behind a snowmobile didn't know I didn't break my leg, so I took to waving as I went by. Anyway, I'm not all that eager to try snowboarding again.

¶¶¶FOOTNOTE (a kiss or a kick -- either way, it's love): Which is important. A lot of spicy scents smell like cinnamon and cloves and, while I like those smells, I tend to think of them as "better as potpourri."

###FOOTNOTE (3D tictactoe): The By Killian site is cool -- it gives an actual list of ingredients. Check it out.

Oh, Thank the Cats

TTHFCIF

It's a tired Friday that started with snow,† so it's kinda nice to meme and not be clever‡ without a net.

That said, I may have a funny little story later today if things don't get too hairy to slack off and blog.

For now, on to the meme.

[SUMMARY: See? There was a point.]

Here are the rules:

1. Link to the person that tagged you and put the rules on your blog.
2. Share 7 weird or random facts about yourself.
3. Tag 7 random people at the end of your post and link to their blog.
4. Let each person know they have been tagged by leaving a note on their blog.

My Tagger - Laurie

First, I'd like to commend Laurie on warning me *yesterday* that she would be tagging me today, even though I had to stay awake like a kid waiting for Santa last night, leading seamlessly into my first weird thing:§

1. I have bravely outlined my increasingly weird sleep habits here. I've slept reasonably well for a reasonably long time, so it's clearly time for some sleep trauma. About a week ago, I stopped knowing WHERE TO PUT MY SHOULDERS. I am baffled. I didnt know there were so many wrong ways to arrange one's shoulders when the lights go out.# I'm not sure what the next solution will be, but I hope it involves a crane.

2. I have secretly assigned a sex to each number and letter. Some are actually hermaphroditic and take their gender cues from their surroundings.††

3. I feel inordinately smug that Helen, my last Secret Pal, sent me a Noro striped scarf prior to the Yarn Harlot's recent canonisation of said project. It makes me feel fashion forward.‡‡

4. I mail-ordered custom cereal from New York last week.

5. I can smell when it's going to snow.§§

6. I hate the word "stink" the way a lot of people hate the word "moist," and I actually react like someone used a particularly nasty four-letter word in front of my grandmother¶¶ when someone says it.

7. I hate eggplant because it feels like a tongue in my mouth.##

Oh, the tagging part is always the hardest. Lyda and Anna-Liza.††† Donna. Kim. Kelly.‡‡‡ Karen. Yvette.

Some of you are getting tagged because I can. Some of you are getting tagged because I haven't heard nearly as much from you lately as I would like. Some of you... well, let's consider it proof of life.

†FOOTNOTE (crossed): Which everybody in Denver acts as if they've never, ever seen before and the freeways turn to parking lots every first snow, even though we only got less than an inch, but that entire sub-inch fell in great white wads during the very peak of rush hour, so it was scarier than we could have imagined. I'm rolling my eyes so hard right now my eyelashes are curling.

‡FOOTNOTE (double-crossed): Or just coherent.

§FOOTNOTE (swerved): A segueway of beauty is a joy forever.

FOOTNOTE (paragraphed): Some would say shamelessly.

#FOOTNOTE (pounded): Not in the really good way. In the sleep way. I don't know if there's a wrong place to put your shoulders in the fun way, unless it's squarely in your partner's sensitive bits. I suspect even that could be fun. I'm thinking about this *way* too much.

††FOOTNOTE (ddouble-ccrossed): You're backing away from the screen right now, aren't you?

‡‡FOOTNOTE (doubble-crossssed): Please don't remind me eleventy-billion people have worn the scarf before me. It taints the illusion.

§§FOOTNOTE (swirling like a blizzard): Not totally weird -- lots of people can, but so many people can't, they think I'm insane when I say, "It's going to snow -- I can smell it!"

¶¶FOOTNOTE (turning my nose up. Twice.): Internally. I try really hard not to hold my weirdities against other people.

##FOOTNOTE (pounded like a dance club beat): Again, not in the good way.

†††FOOTNOTE (double-crossed -- hey if I can count Lyda and A-L as two separate meme targets, I am surely capable of miscounting crosses): Yes, I'm counting them as two.

‡‡‡FOOTNOTE (the train tracks less taken): Remember Kelly?

Some of you may note (and I'd like to receive credit for) my new-found skill in counting to four and beyond. I owe it all to lace-knitting.

Parfum Sacre (edp) - Caron

Marin says: Honestly? The first impression was "Robitussin." Very heavy alcohol and deep, black almost cherry scent. After a few seconds, it smells mostly like amber and vanilla, but with a backdrop of black licorice or cocoa.‡

And Aqua Net.

It's highly evocative of Aqua Net, not just for the kinda sweet, kinda alcohol smell of it, but because I can almost taste it, just like when there's hairspray in the air.

Oh, It's definitely too sweet for my taste. In fact, I think it just went sugar cookie about two minutes ago (that's about 45 minutes into the roll-out, for those of you scoring at home.)

Epilogue: I tried like hell to wash this stuff off. Several times. If you liked this scent, it would be an excellent investment, since even soap and water can't erase it.

The Perfumed Court says: The notes are vanilla,$ myrrh, civet, cedarwood, lemon, pepper, mace,$ cardamom, orange blossom, rose, jasmine, and rosewood. This is a comfort scent. While not as rich as the extrait, it is a lovely woody, warm perfume.

Hans says: Smells like Bed, Bath & Beyond. Or the Body Shop. It's seriously soapy.§

†FOOTNOTE (crossed): Of course, I've already told so many of these stories, I feel I pre-cheated the rules. I can't lie, it's a good feeling.

‡FOOTNOTE (double-crossed): Before you laugh, light black licorice isn't too far off light strains of cocoa to my nose. Sure, if they were strong enough to be easily identifiable, I might not think they smelled so much alike. There's something astringent and sweet (but not sugary) about them both.

$FOOTNOTE (on the money): Ha! Got one! And may I say, "Holy shit!" When I was reading about mace on Wikipedia, thinking it may be that alcohol/astringent thing I'm getting, I scroll down to the "essential oils" section of the entry to find it's *used in cough syrup*. Damn, I'm good. Well, mostly kinda smart-ass, but if your ass is as smart as mine, it doesn't really matter if your head and your nose can get together on this stuff.

§FOOTNOTE (swerved): There's that boys and soap thing again. Man, I got no soap at all with this one. Maybe the astringent thing reads "soap" to Hans...

Yvette tagged me! Yay, Yvette! Now I don't hardly have to think at all!† And I get to talk about myself! It's totally meta!

The Rules:

1. Link to the person that tagged you.
2. Post the rules on your blog.
3. Share six non-important‡ things/habits/quirks about yourself.
4. Tag six random people at the end of your post by linking to their blogs.
5. Let each random person know they have been tagged by leaving a comment on their website.

The list:

  1. I take my coffee with whitener. I don't need cream or milk, just as long as it's whitened a little. Though sometimes I like it black if I'm having it with a creamy dessert.§ My dad has stopped trying to figure out when or why coffee whitener.
  2. During a thunderstorm once upon a time, a car alarm across the street went off for about six hours. Apparently the owner was out of town. It was one of those alarms that changes voices throughout the alarm process. Now when I hear that brand of alarm go off, I sing along 'cause I know all the words.
  3. When I hit the road, I generally get in the lane I want to be in and stay there. If I have to switch lanes somewhere along the line, I get into my ultimate lane as soon as I can. Some people do this for defensive driving reasons and that's why I *say* I do it, but I really do it because I feel secretly smug about knowing the route so well that I know which lanes end or turn into turn lanes or whatever.
  4. I know exactly how I'm going to handle my Powerball winnings.
  5. I sometimes miss my apartment-dwelling, poverty-laden days right out of college. There was something challenging about it and I really bonded with all my friends who were in the same boat.
  6. I have the same birthday as H. Ross Perot, Helen Keller and Captain Kangaroo.

So now it's your turn, Stacey, Kim, Kelly, Sarah, Angelique and eca. Y'all deserve a moment of structured fun.

Besides, eca thinks she needs something to talk about. ;)

†FOOTNOTE (crossed): I hear you out there. I do so think other days. I even occasionally do research. Stop snickering.

‡FOOTNOTE (double-crossed): *snarf* If you'd asked for six important things, I'd be hard pressed to come up with that many. The biggest problem here is narrowing the field of non-important.

§FOOTNOTE (swerved): Mmmmmm... dessert. Welcome to Day Five Without Cookies.

ETA #6: as Kelly pointed out, I may have learned to count to four, but I still can't get to six. When she said that, I went back and counted my memettes over and over and over (Stacey = 1, Kim = 2, Kelly = 3... what the hell is she talking about?) before I realised I'd only listed five things in the meme list.

I are a dork.

Photophobia

Do you know how many things there are to think about when buying a digital camera? And we all know no good can ever come of thinking.

At least I know what's important to me: small enough to stick in a pocket, image stabilisation for drunken photography and macro capability so I can get good shots of stitch definition.

I'll be toddling over to Office Depot and probably down to Wolf Camera at lunch. I'm already shaking from camera withdrawal; I don't think I could wait a decent amount of time to mourn the old camera before moving on to the new one. I may be the Anna Nicole Smith of digital camera owners.

(If this analogy made sense to you, bless you. I think I'm funny.)

Here's an interesting coincidence that I should maybe file away with "Darjeeling means land of the thunderbolt" and "one horsepower is the amount of force it takes to lift 500 pounds one foot in exactly one second" as useful information: This is not the first time I've lost something valuable by setting it on the roof of the car.

Last March, a friend and I were going hiking, and when I was tossing my backpack in the back of her Subaru, I set my wallet on top of the car and didn't think about it again until we got to the trailhead. Hike cancelled, credit cards cancelled, new driver's license procured (with fancy vision restriction added)...

So I apparently only forget things on the top of the car if 1) they're valuable, and 2) I'm hiking.

Presumably, all I have to do is trigger myself not to set good shit on the top of the car when I hike. I've done it twice now, I should note the emerging pattern. I'm not guaranteeing this will be the case, but at least those of you who might be inclined to hike with me can help keep an eye on me.

[SUMMARY: Same senility, different day.]

Shall we address a couple of items from the comments? Since I'm not sure I want to speak of Marin's Weekend of Redemption and Rejection just yet?

Sure we shall. Know why? 'Cause I'm HBIC† and I have the keyboard.%

First, for Brother: I'm planning on using "WAYYYYY better knitter than my brother" mostly as a weak substitute for actual satisfaction in our nonexistent, ongoing sibling rivalry.‡

Second, for Brother: I don't need a camera to post lingerie shots from the lingerie knitting book. Through the magic of the Internets:

Click on her belly button to blow her up. Heh. Digital blow-up doll. Heheh.

[SUMMARY: Internet p0rn at its camera-free, knitted finest.]

Third, for Anna-Liza, the 8 Random Things meme§:

  1. I have told fairy tales to penguins. In their natural habitat.
  2. And otters. Out of their zoo habitat.
  3. I don't like drinks with sugar. I don't mind if they're sweet, mind you, just as long as it's *artificially* sweet.
  4. I have never been in love.
  5. I know every word to "My Baby Takes the Morning Train," which I consider to be the worst, most insidious piece of musical crap every put on the radio, and I would swear to you I've never heard it all the way through even once, but I somehow seem to know every single word.
  6. I actively seek gross sock yarn to knit socks for my father and brother. I have even Googled "gross sock yarn."
  7. I love Canadians in general, Steve Nash in particular.
  8. I use a pre-paid cell phone because, despite my love for technology and gadgets, I still don't like cell phones much and consider mine to be for my convenience rather than yours. This generally costs me about $100 a year and frequently confuses real people in the real world with real cell phone angst. 'Specially since I so often forget it places, let it run entirely out of juice (forgetting to charge it for days) or leave it on the charger (also for days).
I get to tag somebody, right? I don't think I've ever seen Ally answer one of these things. Come to the dark side, Ally...

[SUMMARY: Meme: chain letter of the new millenium.]

†FOOTNOTE (crossed): Head Blogga in Charge

‡FOOTNOTE (double-crossed): I urge you to adopt "WAYYYYY better basketball player than my sister" as your own scrap of cold comfort.

%FOOTNOTE (percented): Oh, the power! The rush! Caligula!

§FOOTNOTE (swerved): See how cool and collected I was there? But this is the first time anyone's ever tagged me, so I feel like a real blogger and all growed up and stuff. Because I'm a dork.

FOOTNOTE (paragraphed): No. It didn't help.
